Okay. I know every year we say, “Next year will be better!” And while I loved that optimism from 2015, I don’t think that 2016 was better by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, 2016 has been one of the overall worst years in a long time. (This comes from the authority of a 20-year-old college student, so take this with a grain of salt).

Here are 12 reasons why 2016 needs to just hurry up and end already, because honestly, 2017 cannot be worse than this.

1. Every terrorist attack, natural disaster, shooting, and catastrophe.

2016 saw a spike in terrorist attacks, mass shootings, and other tragedies affecting the lives and well-being of millions of people all over the world. From the attacks in Nice to the near-constant bombings of Aleppo to the ongoing Flint Water Crisis…my heart breaks every day thinking about the condition of our world.

Disclaimer: This is primarily intended to be a humorous article. I do not intend to exclude or dismiss tragedies, nor do I believe that one is “worse” than another. While 2016 has been a rough year for plenty of funny reasons, ~please~ note that this article does not mock the disasters happening all over the globe.

That being said, these are important. These deserve attention. Every loss of life, every bit of destruction, and every small act of act of evil is a tragedy.

Now on to the rest of the tragic events of this awful year:

2. David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Prince, and Gene Wilder died.

Why must 2016 take everything I love away from me?

3. Brexit.

Up there on the list of “Things That Definitely Should Not Have Happened But Did” and “Thanks For Nothing, Older Generation.”

4. EVERYTHING about this election.

Basically an ongoing disaster that indicates that we have a long way to go for equality and human rights. Nothing like taking one step forward and sixteen steps backward, right?(Also file under the same categories as Brexit).

5. Kendall Jenner deleted her Instagram.

ALSO, Kim Kardashian has been absent from social media. Who am I going to hate to love, love to hate/judge/envy?

6. “Pokemon Go” was nowhere near as great as I thought it would be.

If I can’t tell how far away the Pokemon is and in which direction, I’m not interested.

7. Vine died.

How am I going to mysteriously lose four hours of my time and how will the Internet continue to erode my attention span? Stay tuned.

8. Brangelina broke up.

One of the most iconic celebrity couples, they have now convinced me that love is fake and marriage doesn’t mean anything and nothing matters. I’m not crying. You’re crying.

10. Creepy clowns wandered around.

WHY did this happen? WHO did it? WHAT were they thinking? So many questions. Not really interested in the answers, just interested in people getting their act together.

11. Harambe.

Despite how much the Cincinnati Zoo must hate us all, Harambe will now live on in immortal Internet history as one of the most out of control memes of all time.

12. iPhone 7.

In a vain attempt to continue along the path of innovation, Apple removed the earphone jack and made my life more complicated and expensive than it needed to be.

And to be a fair, a lot more things contributed to this year being the worst year ever. And like I said before, this article does NOT mock the *real* tragedies that have happened and continue to occur. The good news is, we only have about a month and a half left to go, and hopefully next year will be a better one.
